Fun Long Island Wedding Engagement Photos

Super fun engagement photo of couple “eating” flowers! © Dan Wagner 2023

Few things are as much fun for future bride and grooms as shooting their Long Island wedding engagement photos with their photographer. Unlike weddings where the bride and groom are concerned about everything to go according to plan—engagement shoots are pressure free. You can wear comfortable shoes, and get used to smiling and kissing for the camera. I find that couples who consider themselves shy, quickly discover their hidden model personalities. And why not? Any photo you’re not crazy about can be instantly deleted.

In addition to taking all the standard engagement photos, I’m always up for playful shots such as the one above of the couple with flowers in their mouths. This is an artistic theme that you see from time to time in paintings and elsewhere. And for some reason, it always makes people smile. Silliness is a cure for the seriousness of life. So why not celebrate it in photos?

This photo of the groom “morphing” from the waist down into a tree reminds me of paintings of centaurs—mythical creatures that are part man and part horse. I love the way the couple totally committed to the concept. We tried several versions of this photos. Some had the bride in the tree. One thing to be wary of when photographing near rotting trees is the presence of bees. So as photographers, we should always safety check our photography locations.

I really love the engagement photo above because the couple look so natural and relaxed. Their choice of clothing really complements the Fall season, too.

Seven Wedding Engagement Photo Tips

  1. If possible, choose a location that has some significance to you such as where you went on a first date, or someplace you enjoy visiting together

  2. Avoid wearing white or black—colors are more cheerful

  3. Plaids and clothing with busy patterns can be distracting—so keep it simple

  4. Bring extra outfits, and make sure they’re on hangers and wrinkle free

  5. Don’t forget to bring a touch-up makeup kit—good for guys with “shine”

  6. Get a good night’s sleep and avoid alcohol because it make you look puffy around the eyes

  7. Hire a photographer skilled at action shots—static shots can look boring

The last tip about hiring a photographer skilled at action/movement shots is really important. So is taking photos where you’re not looking at the camera. These kind of shots can have a cinematic, and unposed feel—like the photos of the wedding couple in this blog article.

“I could not have been more pleased with our photography choice. Dan was so easy to communicate with and really captured the feeling we wanted in our photographs. His price was fair in comparison with other photographers and was very flexible in creating our package. On the day of the wedding everything went smoothly with no kinks and honestly during the day we barely even knew he was there taking the pictures.”
