This list features wedding cake bakers close to Huntington, NY, because most of the Long Island weddings I photograph are within an hour drive from my Huntington office. I figure it’s easier to work with wedding vendors closest to where you’re getting married and having your reception. Please feel free to let me know if I haven’t included your favorite wedding cake bakeries, so I can add them to this list. By the way, please don’t judge the wedding cake bakers by the photos shown below—check out their website links for a better sampling. Also, the cake bakers below have screenshots from their company’s website and/or Instagram. Thank you!
Use the wedding cake baker’s email addresses for pricing requests!
Note: Any best list is subjective. Just because I haven’t included a wedding cake bakery on this list, doesn’t mean they’re not one of the best. A few of the bakeries on this 11 best list provide contact forms instead of an email address. If you decide to use them, make sure you get their email address so you have an easier way to reach them on the days leading up to your wedding, and on the day of your wedding. Also, bakers and other vendors move from time to time, so please verify all info before getting in your car to pay them a visit—they may have moved!

How Much do Wedding Cakes Cost on Long Island?
Great question! Naturally you can ask the Long Island wedding cake bakers mentioned in this blog for a price quote. But, to give you a rough idea of what your wedding cake might cost, I’ve provided a rough estimate. Remember, some venues charge a cake cutting/plating fee for cakes supplied by outside vendors.
Wedding cakes from Long Island bakers can range from approximately $500 to $1,800, more or less depending upon size, ingredients, and complexity.
Extras such as custom ornaments ($130) and flowers ($50) will increase your wedding cake costs.
How Big Should My Wedding Cake Be to Serve 20-25, 30-40, 40-60, 100, and 300 People?
According to Google, “The average 12" wedding cake serves 40-60 people. The 10" cake on top of that serves 30-40 people and the 8" cake on top of that serves 20-25 people. So, a classic 3-tier cake with 12, 10, and 8 inch layers serves about 100 people.” And if you have 300 guests, you'll need at least a 4-tier cake. The tiers should measure 6", 10", 16", and 20". If you want a 5-tier cake, you'll need 6", 8", 10", 14", and 18".”
How Can I Save Money on My Wedding Cake?
Some couples opt for fancy wedding cupcakes instead of a wedding cake. This is becoming increasing popular.
Another way to save money is to order a small inexpensive wedding cake for the cake cutting ceremony, and a flat sheet cake to serve your wedding guests.
How Can I Preserve My Long Island Wedding Cake to Eat a Year Later?
The tip tier of your wedding cake is often saved to be eaten on your first wedding anniversary. To help your wedding cake last that long, you should wrap it in several layers of plastic wrap, store it in an airtight container or freezer bag, and place it in your freezer. Try using plastic straws or other methods to prevent the plastic wrap from sticking to the cake icing.
7 Tips for Long Island Wedding Cake Photography
This may seem somewhat obvious, but it’s a great idea for the photographer to take some wedding cake photos at the earliest opportunity in case the cake gets damaged.
Take detail photos of the cake topper, and decorations.
Try taking some photos of the cake against a plain background, and with the reception ballroom in the background—with and without guests if possible. Always ask the waitstaff to move the cake for you—never risk moving it yourself.
Before cake-cutting time, be sure to consult the maitre d on where you’d like the cake positioned for the best photos. Also consult the wedding Dj! As a photographer, you don’t want the cake cutting to begin before you’re in position.
Make sure the maitre d knows how to instruct the bride and groom to cut the cake—the groom stands behind the bride, and places his right hand gently over the bride’s right hand as they cut the cake together. Care should be taken not to cut through any cardboard or plastic cake supports.
The maitre d will then use a cake server to plate the cake slice. The groom then serves the bride the first bite.
Whenever possible, photographers should try to get a variety of shots that include closeups, and shots with wedding guests.
It’s long been recognized that the cake cutting is one of those wedding moments where guests are invited to come close and shoot photos with their cellphones. There’s nothing photographers can do but go with the flow. Naturally, this may result in missing some shots. Photographers should free to recreate any moments they miss.
To save money on hourly photo fees, some couples schedule the cake cutting so the photographer can leave earlier.

“Dan Wagner was the best money spent on our wedding. He was nice, professional and did a great job. He took great candid photos—which I love. Not only did we get every picture he took, but the photos were full size and without any writing on them, and they arrived just a few days after we came back home from our honeymoon. We got to choose many pictures for our album. Because everything was digital, he e-mailed me exactly what the layout of the album would be before it was printed, and I was able to make changes. Our album was the nicest I have seen, and everyone who has seen it wishes they had hired him.”
