Light Hearted Long Island Wedding Photos
As many Long Island wedding photographers will tell you, few things are as enjoyable as shooting some fun interactive photos of the bride and groom. Take the night photo above of the couple creating a huge heart around themselves with flashlights. What made this photo so much fun to shoot was the participation of the bride and groom. Showing off their creativity and willingness to play led to a lot of laughs. We rehearsed the photo four or five times, so the bride and groom could get an idea of how the light drawing would look.
Technically, the photography process was pretty easy. I set up the camera on a tripod to frame the scene and position the bride and groom. I then set my shutter speed for 10 seconds, my aperture to f/8, and ISO at 400. My on-camera flash was set to TTL. Next we shot a few test shots to nail the exposure. I applied a minus two thirds compensation to my flash. On the count of three the bride and groom began drawing the heart from the center as I began the exposure and fired the flash. Naturally, this is one of the photos that the couple were eager to see at full resolution after their wedding.
Shortly after taking this photo I was contacted by fellow photographer and author, Rick Salmon. He wound up featuring this photo in his book, Digital Wedding Photography Secrets. Pretty cool. There are lots of variations of this shot that creative wedding photographers love to try. Such as shooting similar photos with sparklers.

“Dan Wagner was the best money spent on our wedding. He was nice, professional and did a great job. He took great candid photos—which I love. Not only did we get every picture he took, but the photos were full size and without any writing on them, and they arrived just a few days after we came back home from our honeymoon. We got to choose many pictures for our album. Because everything was digital, he e-mailed me exactly what the layout of the album would be before it was printed, and I was able to make changes. Our album was the nicest I have seen, and everyone who has seen it wishes they had hired him.”
